Calculate Irish VAT Automatically

Choose the VAT treatment that applies to your supply. Irish VAT rules vary by goods, services and circumstances. Check the applicable rate before issuing your invoice.

  1. Item 1

    Subtotal €0.00 · VAT €0.00 · Total €0.00

Discount and deposit

An invoice discount is shared across items in proportion to their value, so VAT is worked out on each item's discounted price at its own rate.

How to Create an Invoice

  1. Add your business name, contact details and, if you have one, your logo.
  2. Enter your customer's details and the job or property address.
  3. Add each piece of work or material as its own line, with quantity and unit price excluding VAT.
  4. Choose the VAT treatment for each line and add any discount or deposit.
  5. Check the live preview and the totals.
  6. Preview your invoice, then download or print your PDF.

What should a professional invoice include?

A clear invoice number and date, your business name and address, the customer's name and address, a description of the work or goods, quantities and prices, and the total due. If you're VAT registered, Revenue also expects your VAT number, the VAT rate and amount for each rate, and the totals excluding and including VAT. Bank details and a due date make it easier for customers to pay on time.

VAT on labour and materials

Labour and materials don't always carry the same VAT rate, and the right rate depends on what you're supplying, to whom and in what circumstances. Entering them as separate lines lets you apply the correct treatment to each. The generator multiplies quantity by unit price, applies the rate you choose, and rounds each line to the cent so line totals and the invoice total always match.

Invoices with more than one VAT rate

When an invoice mixes rates — for example 13.5% and 23% — each rate is totalled separately and shown in its own row, followed by the total VAT. Zero-rated items (0%) and exempt items are listed separately because they are different VAT treatments.

Invoicing as a sole trader

Sole traders who aren't registered for VAT can still issue invoices — choose “Exempt / No VAT charged” and leave the VAT number blank. Only charge VAT if you're registered and the supply is taxable. If you're unsure, check Revenue's guidance or ask your accountant.

Keep your own copies

This tool doesn't save anything, so download each PDF and keep it with your business records. Irish businesses generally need to keep invoices and tax records for several years, and VAT rates can change — check the current rates on Revenue's website before issuing an invoice.
